A Nyanga retreat is a different kind of AV job to a hotel conference in town. The sessions are longer, the groups are smaller and more senior, and the format shifts constantly — a plenary presentation in the morning, breakaway groups after tea, a plenary feedback session before lunch, and a relaxed dinner with a speech in the evening. The equipment has to support all of that in the same room without a rebuild between each one.

We spec accordingly: a system that handles both a presenter at the front and a discussion round a table, enough wireless microphones that contributions from the room are actually audible and recordable, a screen or projector sized for the room’s real dimensions, and flipchart-and-breakaway support where the programme needs it. Where sessions are being captured for people who could not travel, we set up recording or streaming properly rather than pointing a phone at the front of the room.

The venues themselves are the reason to plan ahead. Highlands resort rooms are frequently long, low, wood-lined spaces that were designed for dining, with acoustics that flatter a fireplace and fight a presenter. Sound behaves differently in them than the floor area suggests, so we ask for the room before we quote rather than assuming.

Weddings and private functions in the mountains

Nyanga weddings are almost always destination weddings, running over a weekend with guests staying on site — a welcome function, the ceremony, the reception and often a Sunday breakfast. We plan the weekend as one job with the crew moving between the setups, which works out better than treating each event as a separate booking.

Outdoor ceremonies in the Highlands are beautiful and acoustically unforgiving. There is nothing to reflect sound back, the ground absorbs it, and there is usually wind. Lapel microphones on the couple and the officiant, a system placed for coverage rather than volume, and a discreet setup that stays out of the photographs are what actually make the vows audible to seated guests. For evening receptions we add uplighting and dancefloor lighting, which do a great deal in a stone-and-timber Highlands room.

Weather, not heat, is the Nyanga variable

Nyanga is the one part of our service area where cooling is not the problem. The Highlands sit high and cold, mist rolls in without much warning, and an evening function in June can be genuinely cold. What matters here is weather cover and damp, not air coolers — so our planning runs the other way round to a Lowveld or Kariba job.

In practice that means proper covered positions for equipment on outdoor setups, cabling and connections protected against mist and dew rather than dust, a realistic wet-weather plan agreed before the day rather than improvised during it, and a build schedule that does not depend on the weather holding. If your ceremony is outdoors, we will want to know what the indoor fallback is and whether the rig can be moved to it quickly — because in Nyanga, sooner or later, it will need to be.

Travel and booking for a Nyanga job

Nyanga is around 270km from Harare via Rusape — a comfortable run by our out-of-town standards, and short enough that a Nyanga booking often pairs neatly with work in Rusape or Mutare on the same trip. Transport and crew travel are itemised in the quote as usual.

Retreat season and the Easter and December holiday periods are when the Highlands resorts fill, and the AV calendar follows them. Three to four weeks is comfortable for a standard booking, more for a multi-day retreat or a wedding weekend where the crew is committed for several days.
