Sound & AV Equipment Hire in Kariba

Sound & AV Equipment Hire in Kariba

Lakeside functions, houseboat events, fishing tournaments and corporate days at the dam — with cooling that matches the heat.

Kariba runs on its own rhythm. The lakeshore resorts fill for tournament weekends and long holidays, the power and water authorities at the dam run their own corporate calendar, and the harbours turn over a steady stream of houseboat parties, lakeside weddings and sundowner functions. JMG Audio brings sound, PA, lighting, staging, LED screens and — for a town this hot — mobile air coolers to all of it, delivered from Harare with our own technicians travelling with the rig.

Tournament weekends and lakeside functions

Kariba’s tiger fishing tournaments are the busiest thing in the town’s calendar, and they are a genuine production job rather than a PA on a stand. There is a weigh-in to run with announcements that carry across an open, noisy, moving crowd, a prize-giving in the evening that needs a stage, screens and proper lighting, and usually live music or a DJ afterwards. The whole thing happens outdoors, in heat, next to water.

We spec for that. A system with enough output and the right dispersion to cover an open lakeside area rather than a room, wireless microphones that keep working when the person holding one wanders away from the stage, and screens bright enough to read in late-afternoon light. The crew stays for the duration, because a tournament weekend is not a setup you switch on and walk away from.

The same applies to the resort functions — end-of-year parties, lakeside weddings, sundowner events on the terraces at the Caribbea Bay and Cutty Sark side of town. These are outdoor evening events where the sound has to reach a spread-out crowd without turning into a noise complaint from the next property.

Houseboats, harbours and events on the water

A good share of Kariba entertaining happens on a houseboat or at the harbour it leaves from, and that changes the equipment brief. Space and power are limited, everything has to be carried down and loaded by hand, and water and expensive electronics are a bad combination that has to be designed around rather than hoped about.

For on-board functions we supply compact, battery-capable systems that give you real sound without needing the boat’s generator running all evening under the deck you are sitting on. For send-offs, weigh-ins and functions at Andora and the other harbours we set up on shore, where we can power and protect the kit properly and still cover the quay.

Tell us at quoting stage whether the equipment is going onto a boat. It is a completely different specification to a shore setup, and it is not a decision to make on the day with the rig already on the trailer.

Corporate events at the dam

The dam brings its own event calendar — the power and water authorities and their contractors run conferences, safety days, long-service awards and site functions in Kariba through the year, and these are business events that happen to be in a resort town rather than resort events. They need conference-grade AV: a PA that works for presentations, screens the back row can actually read, microphones for panels and Q&A, and a technician who stays on the desk.

We cover those at the hotels and conference rooms in town and on site at the dam and the surrounding facilities. Where the programme includes a formal evening function as well as a working day, we build both into one booking so the room turns around cleanly between them.

Air cooler hire in Kariba — because October is brutal

Kariba is one of the hottest places in Zimbabwe, and the weeks before the rains break are genuinely hard going. Forty degrees in the middle of the day is not unusual in October, and the lake holds the heat well into the evening, so an event that starts at six is still starting in serious heat. A tent full of guests in that is not a comfortable place to sit through a prize-giving.

We hire out a fleet of large mobile air coolers — portable aircon units engineered for open-air venues — designed for exactly this. They are evaporative machines on castors: air is drawn through a wet honeycomb pad and delivered cooled, they run from a standard socket, and ice packs drop into the tank when you want output colder still. Unlike a split air conditioner they are built to cool open and semi-open spaces, which is what most Kariba venues are — marquees, terraces, boma areas, open-sided function rooms and harbour-side setups.

The one honest caveat is humidity: evaporative coolers do their best work in dry heat, and once the rains properly arrive their advantage narrows. In Kariba that is not much of a limitation, because the fierce stretch of the year is the dry build-up before the rains, and that is exactly when you want them. Book them with the sound rather than after it — the units go out fast from August onwards.

Travel, power and planning for a Kariba job

Kariba is roughly 365km from Harare, and the last stretch down the escarpment is slow going with a loaded vehicle. Quotes include transport and crew travel as a separate line, and we build the schedule so the rig arrives and is built with daylight in hand rather than at the end of a long drive.

Power deserves a specific conversation. Some venues are solid, some are not, and load-shedding does not respect a prize-giving. We can supply generators sized for the full rig including the coolers, specified with enough headroom that the startup surge does not trip the set, and placed far enough from the seating that the machine is not in your speeches or your video.

Two to four weeks’ notice is comfortable for a standard booking. Tournament weekends and the December holiday period are the exception — those dates get spoken for early, and if your event falls on one it is worth talking to us well ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Do you hire out air coolers in Kariba?

Yes, and Kariba is one of the places they matter most. We supply large mobile evaporative air coolers — portable aircons — on castors, running from a standard socket, with ice-pack capacity for colder output. They are built to cool open and semi-open spaces such as marquees, terraces, boma areas and harbour-side setups, which is what most Kariba venues are. Demand runs hard from August until the rains, so book them with your sound rather than afterwards.

Can you supply sound for an event on a houseboat?

Yes, but it is a different specification to a shore setup, so tell us at quoting stage. On-board we use compact, battery-capable systems that give real output without running the boat’s generator all evening. For harbour send-offs and weigh-ins we usually set up on shore instead, where the equipment can be powered and protected properly while still covering the quay.

Do you cover tiger fishing tournaments?

Yes. A tournament weekend is a full production — announcements across an open, noisy crowd at the weigh-in, then a staged prize-giving with screens and lighting in the evening, often with a DJ or live music after. We spec for open-air coverage rather than room coverage, bring screens bright enough to read in late-afternoon light, and keep the crew on site for the duration.

How much does it cost to bring equipment to Kariba?

Kariba is about 365km from our Harare base, so quotes include transport and crew travel as an itemised line rather than buried in the rate. We keep it proportionate by loading in one trip and combining with other jobs on the same route where the dates line up. Ask for a written quote and you will see the travel component separately.

What happens if the power goes out mid-event?

We plan for it rather than react to it. Generators are sized for the full rig — including the air coolers, which people routinely forget to count — and specified with headroom so the startup surge does not trip the set. Placement matters too: far enough from the seating that the machine is not audible in your speeches or your event video.

How far in advance should I book?

Two to four weeks is comfortable for a standard booking. Tournament weekends and the December holiday period are the exception and get committed early, so if your event falls on one of those dates, talk to us well ahead — particularly if you want air coolers, which are at their most in-demand in exactly that stretch of the year.
