What determines a hire rate

Four things move the number. The first is how many units you need, and per-unit rates drop as the count goes up — a six-unit marquee package does not cost six times a single unit. The second is duration: a single evening, a weekend, a week and a full-season hire are priced very differently, and longer hires are dramatically cheaper per day.

The third is location. A Harare delivery is the cheapest case. Anywhere out of town carries transport, itemised separately so you can see it rather than having it folded invisibly into the rate. The fourth is whether the coolers are travelling on their own or alongside other equipment — if we are already bringing your sound, lighting or screens, the coolers ride on the same vehicle with the same crew, and that saving is passed on rather than pocketed.

We quote in USD, in writing, itemised, before you commit to anything. There is no charge for asking and no obligation attached to a quote.

Why we do not publish a single headline price

Because a single figure would be misleading in almost every case. An air cooler price that is accurate for one unit for one evening in Harare is wrong for six units for a weekend in Kariba by a very large margin — in both directions. Publishing the low number and revising it upward once we know the details is a sales tactic, and publishing the high number loses us work we would have been glad to do.

What we will commit to is this: tell us the venue, the dates, the rough size of the space and how many people will be in it, and you will get a written, itemised quote in USD the same day, with the transport component shown separately. If the number does not work for you, say so and we will tell you honestly whether there is a smaller package that still does the job or whether you would be better off buying.

Hiring versus buying: the actual arithmetic

The question is simply how many days a year you need cooling. Zimbabwe’s hot season runs from roughly August to the break of the rains — call it three months of real need, and for most people only a handful of days within that actually matter. Against a purchase price, a few hire days a year is not a close contest.

Hiring wins clearly when your need is event-shaped: weddings, conferences, conventions, prize-givings, functions. You pay for the days you use, you get the number of units the venue actually needs rather than the number you could afford to buy, you store nothing, you maintain nothing, and you have no capital tied up in machines standing idle from December to July.

Buying wins when the need is operational and repeats daily through the season: a workshop floor, a salon, a clinic waiting room, a restaurant, a shop that runs hot every single afternoon. If you would use a unit most days for three months a year, ownership pays back over a couple of seasons and you should buy.

And there is a sensible hybrid that a lot of businesses land on: own one or two units for the areas that are hot every day, hire additional units for peak weeks, big functions and the worst fortnight of October. We are happy to tell you that is the right answer even though it means you hire less from us.

If you are buying rather than hiring

A few things are worth knowing before you spend money. Size is the one people get wrong most: a small domestic unit with a two- or three-litre tank is a bedroom appliance and will not touch a shop floor or a function room, no matter what the listing calls it. Look at the tank capacity and the physical size of the unit, not the product name.

Check that the pads are replaceable and that replacements are actually available in Zimbabwe, because honeycomb pads are a consumable and a unit whose pads cannot be replaced is a unit with a fixed lifespan. Ask about the pump specifically — it is the part that fails first on cheap units. And be realistic about where you will store it for the three quarters of the year you are not using it.

For the hot-country towns, where these units matter most, it is worth asking early. Rates are the same, but availability in October is not, and the cheapest air cooler is the one that is still in the yard when you call.
