Fan versus cold fan versus aircon fan — the difference explained

A fan — a tower fan, a pedestal fan, a desk fan — moves air across a room. That is all it does. The air comes out the other side at the same temperature it went in. On a mildly warm day this is fine: the air movement creates a wind-chill effect on your skin that makes you feel cooler even though the room is not actually any cooler. On a genuinely hot day in Harare, Bulawayo or the Zambezi valley, a fan is circulating hot air. It helps a little. It is not a solution for a packed function.

A cold fan, a cooling fan, an aircon fan, a water cooled fan or a desert cooler is a different machine entirely. It has a water tank and a set of honeycomb pads. A pump keeps the pads wet, a fan pulls air through them, and water evaporating into the air drops its temperature. The air coming out is genuinely colder than the air going in. This is called evaporative cooling, and it is the principle behind every commercial air cooler and the machine we hire out.

The confusion comes from the fact that both get advertised as fans in Zimbabwe. If your search for 'fan hire' is about cooling a tent, a marquee, a hall, a church, an office or any space that is too hot, what you actually need is the evaporative air cooler — the cold fan, the aircon fan — not a tower fan on a stand.

When a plain fan is enough — and when it is not

A plain fan is enough when the room is not genuinely hot and all you need is air movement — a slightly warm office, a bedroom, a small meeting room. It is not enough when the space is hot and full of people: a wedding marquee, a church convention, a trade fair hall, a conference room at capacity, a factory floor, a tent at an outdoor event. In these situations you need the air to be cooled, not just moved.

If you have hired fans for an event before and found they did not do enough, the step up is an evaporative air cooler. It combines the air movement of a fan with genuine temperature reduction. In Zimbabwe's dry hot season, that temperature drop is substantial — the drier the air, the more effective the cooling.

Cold fans and cooling fans for tents and marquees

Tents and marquees are the single most common venue type where people discover that a fan is not enough. A marquee in direct sun traps heat and pushes temperatures well above the outside air. A fan inside it moves that trapped, overheated air around — which is not the same as cooling it.

Evaporative air coolers — cold fans, aircon fans — placed around the marquee perimeter and blowing inward are what actually change conditions. They lower the air temperature as it passes through the wet pads, then deliver that cooled air across the seating area. Several units together cover the whole tent rather than just the area nearest the machine.

This works best in dry heat, which is exactly what Zimbabwe's hot season delivers. If your event is between August and the rains, and the venue is a tent or marquee, this is the cooling solution that works.

Fan hire for buildings, offices and churches

Buildings with broken, inadequate or non-existent air conditioning need more than a fan in the hot season. An evaporative air cooler plugs into a standard socket, needs no installation, and can be positioned where the heat is worst. For an office, a salon, a clinic, a shop floor, a church hall or a workshop, a seasonal hire covers the hot months without the capital cost of replacing the building's air conditioning system.

These units work whether the windows and doors are open or closed — which matters in venues like churches and community halls where everything is open in the hot season. A conventional split aircon is defeated by an open window. An evaporative cooler is not, because it does not try to chill a sealed volume — it delivers a continuous stream of cooled air.
