Search for a portable aircon in Harare and you will be shown evaporative air coolers, tower fans, refrigerant air conditioners and water cooled fans, all under the same heading and often in the same advert. It is genuinely confusing, and people regularly hire the wrong machine for their space as a result. This page explains the difference in plain terms, tells you which one suits a marquee, a hall, a shop or a sealed office, and gets you to the right unit — which for most Zimbabwean venues is the large mobile air cooler we hire out.
The two machines people mean by “portable aircon”
The first is a refrigerant portable air conditioner. It has a compressor and gas inside, exactly like a split unit or a car’s air conditioning, and it works by moving heat out of the room. Because that heat has to go somewhere, it has an exhaust hose that must vent outside — usually through a window kit. It genuinely lowers the temperature of a sealed room, it works regardless of humidity, and some models also heat, which is where the “heat and cold” description in local listings comes from. It also draws a lot of power and does nothing useful in a space that is open to the outside.
The second is an evaporative air cooler. It has no compressor, no gas and no hose. A pump keeps honeycomb pads wet, a fan pulls air through them, and evaporation cools the air on the way out. It needs water rather than installation, it uses a small fraction of the power, and it works in open and semi-open spaces because it is not trying to chill a sealed volume — it is delivering a continuous stream of cooled moving air.
Both get advertised as portable aircons in Zimbabwe. They are not interchangeable, and the difference between them decides whether your hire works or wastes your money.
Which one does your venue need?
If the space is open to the outside in any way — a marquee, a tent, a boma, an open-sided hall, a covered terrace, a warehouse with the doors up, a church hall with every window open — you need an evaporative air cooler. A refrigerant unit in that space is trying to cool the outdoors through an opening, and it will lose. This covers the very large majority of Zimbabwean event venues.
If the space is a genuinely sealed room with a window you can vent a hose through — a small office, a server room, a bedroom, a closed meeting room — then a refrigerant portable air conditioner is the right tool, and it will cool that room properly in a way an evaporative cooler will not.
There is a middle case worth naming: a closed hall with no working air conditioning and a few hundred people in it. Technically a sealed space, but far too large for portable refrigerant units to make any impression on, and sealing it is not practical anyway. In that situation air coolers placed around the room to move cooled air across the seating are what actually work, which is why halls, churches and conference rooms are some of our most common cooler hires.
What about tower fans, aircon fans and water cooled fans?
A tower fan is a fan. It moves air, which helps, but it does not lower the temperature of that air at all — on a genuinely hot day it is moving hot air around. It is fine for a small room or a desk and it is not a solution for a function.
“Aircon fan”, “air conditioner fan”, “air cooling fan” and “water cooled fan” are all names people use for evaporative coolers, usually the smaller domestic ones with a water tank in the base. Same principle as what we hire, considerably smaller output. A domestic unit that does a bedroom well will do essentially nothing for a marquee with two hundred guests in it, which is the mistake we are most often called in to fix.
“Desert cooler” is the same machine again, a term more common in South Africa and India that turns up in listings here. If you have been quoted a desert cooler, you have been quoted an evaporative air cooler.
What we hire out
We hire full-size commercial evaporative air coolers — chest-height units on lockable castors with a large axial fan, honeycomb pads down the sides, a deep water tank with a level indicator, ice-pack capacity and digital controls for speed, swing, mode and timer. These are the output class that actually changes conditions in a marquee or a hall, not domestic units scaled up in the description.
We do not hire out refrigerant portable air conditioners. If a sealed office or server room is genuinely what you need cooled, we will tell you so and point you towards an air conditioning supplier rather than hiring you a machine that will not do the job. We would rather lose the booking than have you hire the wrong thing.
Where you are already hiring sound, lighting or screens from us, the coolers travel on the same vehicle with the same crew, which is both cheaper and simpler than dealing with a separate cooling supplier on the day.
Power, water and the hot-season rush
Our units run from a standard socket and draw far less power than a refrigerant machine of comparable effect, which matters both for your electricity bill and for generator sizing. If you are running on a generator, count the coolers in the load — they are the item most often forgotten when a set is specified.
They need water on site. Tanks are filled at setup and topped up through a long event, so units have to be reachable and someone needs to know where the tap is. Ice packs in the tank give colder output for a midday function.
Finally, timing. Portable aircon and air cooler demand in Zimbabwe runs from around August to the break of the rains, and the stock across the whole market is committed early. If your event or your hot-season business hire falls in that window, book well ahead of the heat rather than during it.

Will a portable aircon cool a marquee or tent?
A refrigerant portable air conditioner will not — it is designed to cool a sealed volume and a marquee is open to the outside, so it is effectively cooling the outdoors through a gap. An evaporative air cooler will, because it delivers a continuous stream of cooled moving air rather than trying to chill a closed room. For marquees and tents, evaporative is not the budget option, it is the one that works.
What is the difference between an air cooler and an aircon fan?
Usually nothing but the name — “aircon fan”, “air conditioner fan”, “air cooling fan” and “water cooled fan” are all terms people use for evaporative coolers. The real difference to check is size. A domestic unit with a small water tank will cool a bedroom and will do essentially nothing for a function tent. We hire the commercial output class.
Some listings say “heat and cold”. Do your units heat?
No. The “heat and cold” description in local listings refers to reverse-cycle refrigerant units, which can run in reverse to warm a room. Evaporative coolers only cool — there is no heating mode, because the cooling comes from water evaporating rather than from a refrigeration cycle that can be reversed.
Is a tower fan not cheaper than hiring coolers?
Cheaper, yes, but it does a different job. A fan moves air without lowering its temperature, so on a genuinely hot day it circulates hot air. That helps a little and is not a solution for a room full of seated guests. An evaporative cooler drops the temperature of the air it delivers, which is why it changes conditions in a marquee and a fan does not.
